چکیده

In numerous research elds, scientists are increasingly turning to e-science and specifically scienti c work ows as a way of improving, broadening and hastening their results. Enhanced collaboration, on-demand access to tools, data and high performance processing facilities are some of the gains to be made. Scienti c work ows are concerned with, amongst others, supporting the repeatability and provenance of experiments. Scienti c work ows have had a measure of success in the astronomy, bio-informatics, chem-informatics, geophysics and eco-informatics domains [Gil, et. al., 2007]. This paper describes our initial investigations into developing geospatial Scienti c Work ows to support researchers in exploring, integrating and visualising Earth Observation and GIS data in conjunction with other research data. We describe some of the functionalities we require in the context of three sets of research endeavour wild re research, ood modelling and the linking of disease outbreaks to multi-scale environmental conditions. We note the relative lack of support for geospatial data, services and functions within some of the FOSS Scienti c Work ow packages. This paper highlights challenges and results of utilising various FOSS geospatial libraries within these Scienti c Work ow environments.

Earth Observation Scientific Workflows in a Distributed Computing Environment

Geospatially Enabled Scienti c Work ows o er a promising paradigm to facilitate researchers, in the earth observation domain, with many aspects of the scienti c process. One such aspect is that of access to distributed earth observation data and computing resources. Earth observation research often utilises large datasets requiring extensive CPU and memory resources in their processing. These r...

Orbit: Efficient Processing of Iterations

Various scienti c applications compute iterations on a huge set of input data. Examples include parameter sweep, which processes the same model through hundreds or thousands of input data, scienti c visualization and numeric methods to solve hyperbolic equations. The state of the art for executing such applications is to model them as scienti c work ows and to run them in HPC infrastructure. Th...

A Component-Based Data ow Framework for Simulation and Visualization

Reuse in the context of scienti c simulation applications has mostly taken the form of procedural or objectoriented libraries. End users of such systems are however often non software experts needing very simple, possibly interactive ways to build applications from domain-speci c components and to control their parameters. Integrating independently written (existing or new) code as components s...

A Chemical Work ow Engine for Scienti c Work ows with Dynamicity Support

In this paper the notion of a Chemical Work ow Engine (CWE) is introduced to support the enactment of scienti c work ows, i.e. computationally intensive tasks involving large datasets. The execution of scienti c work ows require the coordinated use of a large quantity of resources and scheduling of the activities. Furthermore, these workows may pose various dynamic features that need a special ...

Geographical categories: an ontological investigation

This paper reports the results of a series of experiments designed to establish how non-expert subjects conceptualize geospatial phenomena. Subjects were asked to give examples of geographical categories in response to a series of diŒerently phrased elicitations. The results yield an ontology of geographical categories—a catalogue of the prime geospatial concepts and categories shared in common...
